Tierney Thys (1966–)
After studying biology and zoology at Brown and Duke Universities, Dr. Tierney Thys returned to her birth state of California in 1998. Since then she has travelled the world studying giant ocean sunfish (Mola mola). As Research Director of Sea Studios Foundation, she employs innovative media technology to teach science and raise awareness of the ocean as a resource. Thys produces documentaries, leads student expeditions and serves as an underwater explorer for Animal Jam, a National Geographic online children's game. She also develops digital apps to inspire preschoolers to become stewards of the natural world.
