Studies in the News is a very current compilation of items significant to the Legislature and Governor's Office. It is created weekly by the State Library's Research Bureau to supplement the public policy debate in Californiaís Capitol. To help share the latest information with state policymakers, these reading lists are now being made accessible through the State Libraryís website. This week's list of current articles in various public policy areas is presented below.

Violence affects all racial, ethnic and socioeconomic groups, but falls heaviest on urban, poor and minority populations. This study reports on the effectiveness of a collaboratively designed school-based intervention for reducing children's symptoms of PSTD and depression that have resulted from exposure to violence."]

In these tough budgetary times, the pressure is on to show the best outcomes for the least investment -- leading programs to likely target those who are easiest to reach and easiest to teach. This commentary urges advocates to pay attention to issues of access, equity and quality for youth in under-served rural communities and under-resourced urban neighborhoods. Failing to honestly address issues of effectiveness will weaken efforts to improve programs through better staff training, better data and flexible approaches, and targeted allocation of resources." ["The single most important goal of the Head Start reauthorization should be to improve Head Start and other preschool programs to ensure children are prepared to succeed in school. This paper describes the limited educational progress for children in Head Start and the problems resulting from a fragmented approach to early childhood programs and services. The paper also presents evidence from early childhood research and documents state efforts that have successfully addressed these problems. Finally, the paper explains the Presidentís proposal for Head Start reauthorization, which builds on the evidence to strengthen the program and, through coordination, improve preschool programs in general to help ensure that children are prepared to succeed in school."]
