Fine Arts Photographer Bob Kolbrener featured in new State Library exhibit

SACRAMENTO, California – The California State Library presents a new exhibit, Living by the Sun - The Western Landscape Photographs of Bob Kolbrener. The exhibit currently on display in the State Library Rotunda at 900 N Street is open to the public Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. through the end of August.

Kolbrener's interest in photography began in the early 1960s as a way to pass the long cold winters in St. Louis, Missouri. He was still an amateur photographer when he walked into the Ansel Adams Gallery of Yosemite National Park (formerly Best Studio) in 1968. He returned the same year and attended his first workshop and eventually graduated to teaching the workshops with Adams. Following Adams' techniques Kolbrener perfected his own style. Of his style he says, "I was photographically educated in the classical tradition. all of my photographs are made in real time. using film and paper with no manipulation."

This magnificent exhibit of stunning black and white images features many Yosemite locations, reflecting the beauty of the American West where Kolbrener spent most of his career photographing spectacular vistas and landscapes. Always searching for the right play of sky and clouds, he creates one-of-a-kind masterpieces.

His work has been shown in museums and galleries around the country. Gary Kurutz, Special Collections Librarian Emeritus, who curated the exhibit stated, "I have studied photographs of the great valley for close to forty years and these are the finest I have ever seen."

Kolbrener's collection of black and white photographs was made possible through generous donations made to the California State Library Foundation.
