Periodical of the Month

Bust-length portrait of Thomas R. Bard, Republican United States Senator from Southern California 1900-1905. Congratulations to the writers and editors of our December Periodical of the Month, Journal of Ventura County History! We have featured the index to the 2012 issue, in part because of its focus on the intersection of environmental and cultural history. By looking at the estate of rare plant collectors, Thomas and Mary Bard, and the way in which they and subsequent owners managed the rare flora the Bards planted, this article conveys the cultural significance of non-native plants to California, as well as many native species. If you like stories about people caring for a property of historic significance, you might enjoy this periodical.

At the end of 2015, in an effort to better acknowledge and support work in the California history community, the California History Section started the Periodical of the Month program. This recognition honors quality research, editing and writing in periodicals devoted to California history. If you have any questions about this program, please feel free to contact us.
