Easy Voter Guide Helps Busy Voters with Complex Propositions

SACRAMENTO - The nonpartisan Easy Voter Guide Project has the perfect tool for busy voters who are trying to get an unbiased overview of the eight statewide ballot measures in the November 8, 2005 Special Election. The 8-page Easy Voter Guide provides a succinct jargon-free summary of how each proposition affects current law, what it will cost and highlights of the pro and con arguments. The guide is available in English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese online at www.easyvoter.org and is also being distributed as a free printed booklet by library branches and over 1,000 organizations across the state.

"Many Californians are overwhelmed with partisan messages but feel they have very little in the way of nonpartisan information to help make their voting decisions. We are pleased that public libraries all over the state can offer free Easy Voter Guides to voters in multiple languages," said State Librarian of California Susan Hildreth, one of the lead sponsors of the Easy Voter Guide Project, which also provides a wide range of nonpartisan voter education resources at the www.easyvoter.org website.

This is the 14 th edition of the nonpartisan Easy Voter Guide that has been published for each statewide election since 1994. The California State Library is the project's longest running sponsor, joined by the California Secretary of State's Office, the League of Women Voters Education Fund, the James Irvine Foundation and the San Francisco Foundation. Organizations distributing free printed copies of the 16-page Easy Voter Guide booklet in five languages include libraries, county elections offices, schools, community colleges, churches and a wide range of community groups. Voters can view the guide online at www.easyvoter.org or also use a search function to find booklets in their area. The Easy Voter Guide also has partnerships with 30 newspapers across the state, adding another 2 million in guide circulation.
